It is sunny, it is cold and holidays are coming.

October 1 is Chinese National Day and it includes a seven day holiday so will relax, maybe go and visit another town for a bit of sightseeing

Today is a traditional festival to celebrate the harvest  from the summer. It is timed by the lunar calendar to coincide with the full moon. Mooncakes are eaten during this festival , they are made from a type of shortcake and filled with different kinds fruits and pastes.

They were considered a treat in days gone by and still are with many, but the younger ones in the cities are not as keen on them as there parents etc are, they now prefer KFC and the like, but they like the holiday although most are given extra homework to do during the break.

Nice and sunny today but has been cooler overnight.

Video of one of my classes making mooncakes, all the classes did it and enjoyed the change. The galley cooked them all and then kids wrapped them up to take hope to give to parents, actually they were much better than the bought ones.

All children do some Army training, lasts about three or four days and starts when they are about 14 years old. Not all look forward to this but when it is all over they tell me it was great.

It is a bit rigorous and Chinese kids are not used to doing things for themselves, their priority is learning and they study all the time while other do the work around them. Few kids can cook a breakfast or wash their clothes but they are clever.

Today, some classes were off to the Army camp not too far from us and they did not look too much like soldiers and most unenthusiastic.

Having a beer to quench my thirst. My father always said that a beer before dinner time would make you eat everything in front of you and it always seemed to work and still does.
Mei and I were taken to Shenyang, some time ago to look at the Imperial Palace, so a little video of our trip.

Hot today 12/08/2010

Has been 33c today so have been sitting in my air-conditioned living room, did go and pick some mint for putting in with my new potatoes and am cooking some roast lamb chops for dinner.
Some of George's photos.

Gerry from Geraldine (another teacher here) met up with some Australians who are working with the steel company here to set up the mining project back in Western Australia. Anyway he thought we all should have a dinner together so off we went to a barbecue restaurant and enjoyed their company, albeit they were Aussies but it turned out that some were from South Africa and one Italian but all living in Perth now. A bit of bullshit thrown here and there but really an enjoyable evening. Mostly English spoken all evening, poor old Mei was left out a bit, as the only woman and only Chinese, but her understanding and speaking of English is improving as is my Chinese.
